Family Office vs Wealth Management: Which Does Your Family Need?
A family office and a wealth management firm both manage significant assets, but they differ sharply in structure, cost, and scope. For families in the $5 million to $50 million range, the question is rarely which label to choose. It is which model delivers the coordination you actually need without paying for infrastructure you may not use.
Talk to a fiduciaryThe Core Distinction
What Is a Family Office vs a Wealth Management Firm?
The difference between a family office and wealth management comes down to structure, exclusivity, and scope. A family office is a dedicated organization built to serve a single family or a small group of families. A wealth management firm is a registered investment advisor that serves multiple clients with integrated investment, tax, and estate planning services. Both can coordinate across financial disciplines, but the overhead, cost structure, and customization depth differ materially.
Family Office
A family office is a private organization, separate from any bank or brokerage, that manages all aspects of a wealthy family's financial life under one roof. This includes investment strategy, tax planning, estate and succession planning, philanthropic giving, risk management, and sometimes household staffing and concierge services. The core purpose is integration: ensuring that investment decisions, tax obligations, estate structures, and multi-generational goals do not operate in silos. Single-family offices (SFOs) serve one family exclusively, while multi-family offices (MFOs) share infrastructure across several families.

Wealth Management Firm
A wealth management firm is a registered investment advisor (RIA) that provides integrated financial planning, investment management, tax strategy, and estate planning coordination to multiple clients under a fiduciary standard. Unlike a single-family office, a wealth management firm spreads its operational costs across a client base, which can make comprehensive coordination accessible at lower asset thresholds. A comprehensive RIA may deliver family-office-level services without the dedicated overhead of a standalone organization.

Family Office vs Wealth Management: Key Differences
The table below compares the two structures across the dimensions that matter most to families evaluating which model fits their situation. Cost figures are illustrative ranges, not quotes, and actual costs vary based on family complexity, asset composition, and service scope.
| Dimension | Single-Family Office (SFO) | Comprehensive Wealth Management RIA |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | All financial and lifestyle affairs of one family, including household staff, bill payment, and concierge | Investment management, tax strategy, estate planning coordination, and financial planning for multiple client families |
| Cost Structure | Direct overhead: staff salaries, technology, office space. Typically requires substantial assets to justify | Advisory fee as a percentage of assets. Operational costs shared across client base, generally more cost-efficient at lower asset levels |
| Typical Asset Threshold | Generally $175M+ for a single-family office to be cost-effective; MFOs may serve families starting around $25M-$50M | Often accessible starting around $5M-$10M, depending on the firm's minimums and service model |
| Exclusivity | SFO serves one family exclusively; MFO serves a limited number of families | Serves multiple client families with personalized strategies, but not exclusively dedicated to one |
| Governance | Family-controlled investment committees, family constitutions, and direct oversight of all decisions | Advisor-led with client input; investment policy statements and regular reviews guide decisions |
| Private Markets Access | Direct control over private investments, direct company stakes, and custom deal flow | May provide access to private market investments through vetted funds and co-investment opportunities, though access and terms vary |
| Fiduciary Standard | Family interest is inherent, but regulatory fiduciary obligations may vary depending on structure | Registered investment advisors are held to a fiduciary standard under the Investment Advisers Act |

Decision Framework
When Does Each Structure Make Sense?
The right choice depends less on a specific net worth threshold and more on the complexity of your financial life, the value you place on dedicated infrastructure, and whether your needs justify the overhead of a standalone organization. Below is a practical framework.
When a Formal Family Office Makes Sense
- Assets are substantial enough that dedicated staff and infrastructure are cost-justified, generally at very high asset levels
- The family requires services beyond financial management, such as household operations, concierge logistics, or direct operating company oversight
- The family wants exclusive, direct control over investment decisions, private deal flow, and governance structures
- Multi-generational wealth transfer involves entities, trusts, and operating businesses that require full-time professional management
When Comprehensive Wealth Management Is the Better Fit
- Assets are in the $5M-$50M range, where a standalone SFO may not be cost-effective but coordination is still essential
- The family needs integrated investment, tax, and estate planning but does not require household management or concierge services
- Access to private market investments and institutional-grade strategies matters, but the family does not need to build its own investment team
- The family values fiduciary oversight, transparent fee structures, and the ability to scale services as wealth grows
Cost and Service Overlap
What Overlaps and What Does Not
Many of the core services a family office provides, including investment management, tax planning, estate coordination, and access to private markets, are also available through a comprehensive RIA. The primary differences are in lifestyle services (household staffing, bill payment, concierge), governance infrastructure (family constitutions, dedicated investment committees), and the cost efficiency of the delivery model.
For most families in the $5M-$50M range, the services that matter most, coordinated tax strategy, investment management, estate planning, and private market access, can be delivered through a wealth management firm without the overhead of a standalone organization. The trade-off is that the family does not get exclusive, dedicated staff or direct control over every operational decision. Whether that trade-off is worth the cost savings depends on the complexity of the family's needs and the value placed on dedicated infrastructure.
Services Available in Both Models
- ✓ Investment management across public and private markets
- ✓ Integrated tax planning and coordination with CPAs
- ✓ Estate and succession planning coordination
- ✓ Charitable giving and philanthropic strategy
- ✓ Risk management and insurance review
- ✓ Multi-generational wealth transfer planning
Services unique to a formal SFO typically include household staffing, bill payment, property management, and concierge logistics. Whether those justify the overhead is a family-specific decision.

Our founder, Jonathan Dane, CFA, CFP, previously served as Director of Portfolio Strategy and Research at a multi-family office, and the firm was built to deliver the coordination families expect from a family office without the overhead of building a standalone organization. Our Atlas Framework structures every client relationship around five interconnected disciplines: Architecture, Taxation, Liquidity, Allocation, and Succession.
Integrated Tax Strategy
Tax planning is built into investment and estate decisions, not handled separately. This includes Roth conversion planning, charitable giving strategies, and coordination with your CPA. Results vary by individual tax situation and may involve trade-offs.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
At what level of wealth do you need a family office?
There is no universal threshold, but a single-family office is generally cost-effective only at very high asset levels, often $175 million or more, because the family is absorbing the full cost of dedicated staff, technology, and infrastructure. Multi-family offices may serve families starting around $25 million to $50 million. For families below those ranges, a comprehensive wealth management firm may deliver similar coordination at a lower cost. See our detailed family office minimum net worth guide for a deeper analysis.
What are the disadvantages of a family office?
The primary disadvantages of a formal family office are cost and overhead. A single-family office requires hiring and managing dedicated staff, maintaining technology systems, and absorbing operational expenses that a wealth management firm spreads across multiple clients. Additional challenges include key-person risk if a chief investment officer or family office executive departs, the complexity of building and managing an internal team, and the potential for scope creep as the office takes on tasks that could be outsourced more efficiently.
Is a family office part of wealth management?
A family office is a structure within the broader wealth management landscape, but it is not the same as a wealth management firm. A family office is a dedicated organization serving one or a small group of families, while a wealth management firm is a registered investment advisor serving multiple clients. Both provide investment management, tax planning, and estate coordination, but the delivery model, cost structure, and scope differ. A comprehensive RIA can provide family-office-level coordination without the formal family office structure.
At what net worth should you consider a family office?
Families typically consider a formal family office when their wealth reaches a level where dedicated infrastructure is cost-justified. For a single-family office, that is often $100 million or more. For a multi-family office, the threshold may be lower, around $25 million to $50 million, because costs are shared. However, the decision is not purely about net worth. It also depends on the complexity of the family's financial life, whether lifestyle services are needed, and whether the family values exclusive control over shared infrastructure.
What is the difference between a single-family office and a multi-family office?
A single-family office (SFO) serves one family exclusively with dedicated staff and infrastructure. A multi-family office (MFO) shares staff, technology, and operational costs across several families, which can lower the asset threshold for access. Both provide coordinated investment, tax, and estate services, but an SFO offers complete exclusivity and control while an MFO balances personalization with cost efficiency.
